Shaw RE: Inequities Please excuse my late reply to your June 7th letter, but my wife and I celebrated our 10-th anniversary and her recent graduation from Towson by taking a three-week trip through Europe. With respect to the concern that you raise I can only say that we try to distribute the money most equitably and in doing so it meant that we could not reward those men and women who were promoted but rather we had to deal with the most gross inequities as we saw them. As your summary clearly reveals most of these inequities were corrected at the .lower ranksso that the decision to consider only inequities of $1,000 pr more did not, I believe, work to the disadvantage of the lower ranks. I agree with your observation, however, that a differential of$500 is a greater inequity for an instructor than it is for a professor. While none of us are pleased with the amount we had to work with, I think it is important to note that women did receive a greater percentage of the money than their percentage of the entire faculty would suggest. This is only fair in terms of the concerns that the Committee on the Status of Women have raised. KAS:pw
