My dear Mr. Purdum: I have considered the question of payment of Eight Hundred and Five Dollars ($805) to the Maryland and Penn¬ sylvania Railroad Company for the balance due for work performed on the switch constructed into the Normal School grounds to and over the coal bunkers at the Power House. I was not aware that the Company had done the extra work which you mention in raising the grade some two feet so that they might construct the track over the coal bunkers and now you tell me that they will also extend the track in order that we may unload two cars at one time, instead of one. I realize that this extra work has cost the Company considerable money and am disposed to be fair with them in this matter, especially in view of the fact that the cor¬ respondence and their understanding of the matter wa.3 that we were to pay Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000) for the work performed. The difference between the amount already paid by us for the grading and the $2,000, which apparently from the correspondence, we were bound to pay, is $805, and I take pleasure, in view of the extra work performed by the Company, in signing the check paying this balance. I believe this settlement ought to be agreeable to all parties, especially, as I have said, in view of the fact that the railroad company has given us this extra work and have been so anxious to please the Institution.
