Letter from Elaine Hedges to Annette Chappell, 1986

Jan. 3, 1986 Annette, Extra section of Women in Perspective, added after preregistration, has filled already. We have no spaces for Continuing Studies students or for those who will arrive at in-person registration. We have no available faculty for additional sections. I see a steady demand in the future for additional sections of Women in Perspective. And I disuussed with you thE need, also, for an additional section, per year, of Women's Words, Women's Lives, the second writing course. Judy Markowitz is willing, in 1986-1987, to teach one extra section of Women in Perspective each semester, as overload, for $1000 per section. And Claire Smearman has indicated willingness to teach one section of Women in Perspective in Continuing Studies during 1986-1987. These however may be stop gap measures only. I foresee the need for an additional regular half-time Women's Studies faculty person, who could teach several sections of Perspective each year, and a section of Women's Words. I have therefore described this as a "New Position Request" on the MARC request. Meanwhile, as per our conversation about using present faculty to fill these needs, I have thought of Cindy Himes for Perspective, if the History department could free her; and Margaret Blanchard for Women's Words (since you suggested that Kay Edgington's and Debbie Shaller's contracts might make it difficult for them to teach Women's Words). In any case, I have listed under object .02 a sum of $2000 to cover two additional sections of Women in Perspective for next year. I have also attached an explanation for the increased funds requested in items .02 through .13. These sums have been arrived at after consulting with Sara Coulter and adding her estimates of minimum amounts needed to run a maintenance-only continuation of the FIPSE work to the sums granted in the~urrent budget for running the Women's Studies program. If we are to have the half-time secretary and the release time, we need the funds in order to have them do the basic maintenance work and perhaps some minimal off-campus work. Elaine Hedges
