January 13, 1954 Student Council meeting minutes

Library MINUTES OF STUDENT COUNCIL 4:20 P.M. Wed. January 13, 1954 The meeting was called to order by the vice-president Ted Danish. The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer gave his report; the balance is $17,621.33 and the petty cash is $25.55. Expenses for the conference table, stationer's supplies and a deposit amounted to $713.00. George said that the administration had asked for the treasurers' books and if they were not turned in first semester grades would be held up. Tentatively budget hearings will be held Wed. Feb. 3, Thurs., Feb. 4, and Monday Feb. 8. The schedule will be posted. ted read a letter from the recently established Alpha Psi Omega which is a dramatic honor fraternity; the chapter is called the Iota Sigma Cast. This organization derives membership from the Glen Players but is otherwise unaffiliated with them, The cast is based upon a point system. Kathryn Bradley expressed the desire of a group of students to form a service club on campus to handle community chest drives etc. She listed four projects which this club would like to sponsor: 1. The March of Dimes 2. Red Cross 3. Mend Christmas toys for underprivilieged children or orphans. 4. Make Easter baskets for " " " " Discusion was held and it was mentioned that the APO which is our present service organization would help with these projects but was too small to handle the drives alone; and this service club would be more to solicit money for the community than for the college. At the suggestion that a certain amount of money from our activity fees be set aside for purposes of charity it was stated that the students would have no control over which drive they would contribute to. Generally speaking most of those present were in favor of having the Service Club if established handle the drive. The organization has not technically been created as yet but George Hohl made a motion that the Council tentatively approve the move to sponsor the Service Club and let them go ahead with their program as a group of interested students. The motion was seconded and carried. Pat Karl, Dick McCall, and Irene Paul abstained. George Hohl read the HAA contract with the Delphinians. It was discussed that the MAA needed $160. for their dance. It was asked why the MAA didn't come to the SGA first before signing the contract and why couldn't the money come from the Athletic Fees. In the latter case George explained that the Athletic Fee pays for equipment only. Pat karl suggested that the MAA could borrow the money from the SGA and pay it back; 2) Margie Sadler said the SHA could pay $100. and let the MAA pay the rest, and 3) Mis Woodward suggested that the MAA must have money in their treasury so let them pay for the dance and later on the Council could decide whether or not to reimburse them. Since we lacked a quorum and could take no further action it was suggested that the Secretary write a note to the MAA asking them to use their own funds until the Council takes action later; the group agreed to do this. Pat Karl read the contract for the Sweetheart Dance to be held at Keith's Ballroom. She said she needed more people on the various committees. The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 P.M.
