Integrating the Scholarship on Women Project Description

Integrating the Scholarahip on Woaen ProJect Deacription We are concluding a three-year grant to integrate the new acholarahip on women into the traditional curriculum. We have conducted five semesters of workshops for over 70 faculty in 13 different disciplines to introduce them to the important new materials on women in their disciplines and assist them in incorporating these materials into their courses. The ultimate goal of the proJect, and others being conducted throughout the United Statea, is to produce a transformed curriculum in higher education which more accurately reflects the history, perspectives, and achievements of both women and men We have conducted workshops in eight liberal arts and sciences disciplines: American history, American literature, art, biology (including health), composition, English literature, psychology, and sociology; and in three professional areas: business, education, and professional writing (including health and occupational therapy). In each of the eleven workshops faculty have 1) read and analyzed both the theory and content of the new scholarahip, 2) conducted individual research proJects, 3) revised courses in light of this new theory and content, and 4) taught their revised courses for two semesters. Four conferences have reinforced and extended this work. The first offered an overview of the nature and meaning of curriculum transformation work, helping faculty to establish a context for their own efforts. The second, an Interdisciplinary Conference, presented the implications of the scholarship on women across the curriculum, providing faculty with an opportunity to see how change in their discipline is being reinforced by change in other disciplines. The third, a Pedagogy Conference, raised the issues of how we teach and whether the classroom is a "chilly climate" for women. The fourth, an Area Conference, presented the results of the proJect to selected educators in higher and secondary education in the Baltimore-Washington area. A newsletter, RE-VISIONS, publiahed twice a year, has provided an on-going review of the activities of the project for all Towson State
