THETA BETA Towson University’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (International History Honor Society) presents: Harry Rosenbach Holocaust survivor and a passenger on the St. Louis The Si. Louis in Havana harbor (Source: USHMM Photographic Archive) On May 14, 1939, the German liner St. Louis left Hamburg with 937 German-Jewish refugees. It was the beginning of an ill-fated journey to escape persecution at the hands of the Nazi government. Upon arriving, only 22 of the passengers were allowed to land at Havana, despite long negotiations with Cuba, the United States, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina. A month later, the St. Louis was forced back across the Atlantic. Of the remaining passengers, 288 found a safe haven from the Nazis in Great Britain. However, of the 619 taken in by France, Belgium and other west European countries, few would survive the war years. Please join us in Linthicum Hall Room 310, on Wednesday March 17, 3:30 p.m.
