Five Year Plan for the National Center for Curriculum Transformation

FIVE YEAR PLAN FOR THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR CURRICULUM TRANSFORAMTION This document presents a five-year plan for the National Center for Curriculum Transformation Resources on Women (NCCTRW). The objective of this plan is to make the Center relatively self-supporting through a variety of revenue generating activities. It also details a plan for obtaining grant funding. However, given the increasingly scarce funding for curriculum transformation projects, I believe it is crucial for the long term future of the NCCTRW to develop revenue generating activities. Another of my objectives is to give the NCCTRW international visibility and to make it the leader in internationalizing the study of women and gender. The first activity, that of conducting summer institutes in international settings, was begun this past academic year (1999-2000). The Barbados Summer Institute on Internationalizing the Study of Women and Gender was very successful, drawing 27 participants from the United States, Canada, Sweden and Israel. It raised approximately $20,000 in revenue, of which about $6,000 was profit. During the upcoming academic year I plan to begin developing the resources for a summer institute in Brazil on Race and Gender in Comparative and International Perspective. My effort to obtain grant funding for the summer institutes from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) was unsuccessful. However, given the success of the Barbados Institute, I plan to submit a revised proposal to the Ford Foundation for the summer institutes to be held in Brazil and Africa. Based on my experience with the Barbados Summer Institute, I also intend to organize future institutes to be more economically productive. The second initiative is an effort to find a market for the Center’s publications, which have not sold at the level that was expected. The Affiliates of the NCCTRW Program (see attached flyer) will charge participants a fee of $25.00 initially, for which participants will receive two center publications, access to an electronic forum on curriculum transformation resources, and other resources listed on the flyer. In addition to raising revenue, through this initiative I expect to market the Center’s publications, publicize the Center and its activities and build a clientele base for them. The third initiative is web based curriculum transformation workshops. The first of these, Race, Gender and Multiculturalism, I will develop during the upcoming academic year and use it to demonstrate the viability of such workshops in an effort to obtain grant funding. Future workshops are planned for areas that are either currently fashionable, such as Women’s Studies/Area Studies and Internationalizing the Study of Women and Gender, or for disciplines that have lagged significantly behind in their incorporation of women and gender into the curriculum. These include the disciplines of economics and political
