February 3, 1954 Student Council meeting minutes

Library MINUTES OF STUDENT COUNCIL Wed. Feb. 3, 1954 4:00 P.M. The regular meeting of the Student Council was called to order by the president, Jim Addy. The minutes of the last regular meeting were not read but the minutes of the last special meeting were read and approved. The treasurer gave his report. The balance in the treasury is $17,641.23. The petty cash is $25.55 and the cushion fund is $1000. Disbursements were as follows: MAA Dance - $160.; NSA travel expenses - $14.63; deposit for Keith's Ballroom - $25.; printing of the Dance tickets ( Sweetheart Dance ) - $6.50; office telephone bill - $ 8.12; stationery - $ 17.70; advance sale for dance - $100. George announced the schedule for budget hearings to be held from 6:30 P.M. Feb. 3,4, and 8 in the SGA office. The schedule is posted throughout the college on the various bulletin boards. Jim announced that we may have a boy from Korea as our foreign student. Jim introduced a proposed amendment to the Financils Policy concerning the auditing of books. George said that Dr. Zimmerman, head of Research and Finance from the Dept. of Education, had submitted recommendations to Dr. Hawskins which would be passed on in writing to the Student Council. A question was raised about the constitutional amendment which was circulated concerning the auditing of books. Jim said that since we do not as yet have enough signatures on the petition we could expedite matters by amending the Financial Policy first. Discussion was held and it was mentioned that an auditor could cost up to $100. Irene Paul made a motion that we add to the Financial Policy the statement: All treasurers' books whose organizations are under the jurisdiction of the SGA be audited annually. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Next Jim announced the formulation of a new Student - Faculty Committee to investigate the Absence Policy. The faculty members are: Dean Murphy, Dr. MacDowell, and Mr. Guess. Discussion was held and Chris Baugh, Mary Jane Mack and Mary Ann Sadler were noominated as student representatives to this committee. Chrish Baugh, Mary Jane Mack, and Mary Ann Sadler were elected. The Secretary (SGA) will write a letter to Dr. Hawkins notifying him of the election of these people. Discussion was held on the idea of sending representatives to the Eastern States Association Conference to be held March 25-27. Suggestions made concerning expenses were (1) Have the SGA split the cost with the class and (2) Have teh SGA split the cost with the individual representative. The cost of the trip is $50.per person. The SG President is automatically a delegate. In discussing the value of the trip to the entire college it was suggested that each representative submit a written report upon his return and these reports could be compiled and published in the Tower Light. Tony Marchione made a motion that we send Jim and three other representatives to the ESA. The motion was seconded and carried; Patti Losco and Dick McCall abstained. Phyllis Burke, May Ewell, Dick Litsinger, Mary Jane Mack, Fred Schwartz, and Dick Wallace were nominated as representatives. P. Burke, M. Ewell, and F. Schwartz were elected. Pat Karl read the contract of the SGA with Keith's Ballroom. Mary Lou Evans made a motion that the Council approve the contract. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Volunteers for the Tone Committee which is a committee to establish certain standards for dress and conduct on campus were Carol Duckwall, Pat Karl, Dolores Deardorff, Fred Ritter and Betty Hartley. These people will be notified of the first meeting of their committee. Jim urged the attendance of all Council members at the SGA Assembly on Feb. 9 because a referendum concerning the lighting board of the Glen Players will be discussed and voted upon.
