Ehrlich, Jr. A Lesson in Courage The Baltimore area is slowly recovering from last week’s train derailment in the heart of the city. As national news reports indicated, the circumstances facing the city were daunting: a 60-car freight train carrying toxic chemicals derailed under the busy communes of Howard Street; moments later, flames and black smoke poured out of the nearly two-mile tunnel. The fear of an explosion was enough for city officials to evacuate the surrounding area, even Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Despite all the confusion which resulted from the wreck and subsequent fire, one fact remained perfectly clear - Baltimore City’s fire fighters displayed poise and courage in the face of unspeakable dangers. With little regard for their personal safety, these fire fighters braved toxic fumes and a blazing fire under the heart of the city, despite warnings that the tunnel could collapse at any moment. It is a remarkable story, but one that should surprise no one. I have worked closely with the fire fighting community for many years, and have learned that challenges like those found under Howard Street last week are just part of the job these unsung heroes have chosen. I value the service of the men and women whose contributions to the community save and protect lives each day, but there are many challenges outside the line of duty that face fire fighters today. Local fire departments throughout the nation have a host of responsibilities, ranging from fire suppression to emergency medical care. Preparation for these activities takes extensive training and specialized equipment, not to mention significant funding. For instance, a ladder truck can cost as much as $750,000, and safety gear and breathing apparatus for just one fire fighter can reach $4,500. Unfortunately, these financial demands are simply out of reach for many fire departments.
