Ehrlich, Jr. MAKING IT COUNT WITH JOBS Update You may recall in an earlier column, I announced that the Baltimore area was fortunate to be selected as the location of one of three regional data capture sites built expressly for the 2000 Census. Workers at the Baltimore Data Capture Center, located in Rosedale, will be responsible for processing nearly 40 million census questionnaires returned from the Eastern states. The Census 2000 data obtained from these centers will determine funding for federal programs and will assist private sector and community planning. This past year, I have been working with Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) officials to help place workers in the Baltimore Data Capture Center. The Rosedale facility has already created 270 jobs and will create an additional 2,500 opportunities by March 2000. Over the next several weeks, the Center is pre-screening for team leader, data entry, and several other positions for hire in February 2000. After two weeks training, these individuals will process returned questionnaires from March until September 2000. Two eight hours shifts are anticipated daily, with a third shift possible during peak processing time between March and July 2000. These jobs provide a perfect opportunity for college students needing help with expenses, seniors wanting to stay in the work force on a limited basis, or individuals desiring only temporary or part-time employment in order to stay home with their families.
