- Description
- Photograph of Sweetser Linthicum, left, and Seth Linthicum, right, presenting a portrait of their uncle, J. Charles Linthicum to the University. Linthicum was a member of the House of Representatives from 1911-1932 and a 1886 graduate of the Maryland State Normal School. He was also the chair of the Building Commission the oversaw the site selection and construction of the Towson campus of the Normal School. On a national level, Mr. Linthicum spent 13 years getting the "Star-Spangled Banner" designated as the national anthem. Armed with a petition containing five million signatures and the support of 150 civic organizations, Representative Linthicum was able to win passage of the necessary legislation. In 1968, the Towson campus dedicated the newly built Linthicum Hall in his honor.
