Last Updated December 12, 2022 CLA Council Training and Orientation Guide Purpose of Committee: The purpose of the CLA College Council is to "formulate recommendations to the Dean on policies for the general welfare of the College” (CLA Constitution and Bylaws, p. 2). How members are selected/elected: Members of the Council serve for three-year terms. Departments elect a member to the council, while members- at- large are elected by the College. If a vacancy occurs before the regularly scheduled election, department representatives are replaced by a department election and at large members are replaced by appointment by the Council Chair to serve until the next regularly scheduled election. The composition of the council demands that the creation of staggered terms (one, two, or three years), so that no more than 1/3 of the Council is up for election in any given year. Faculty members serve no more than two consecutive, three-year terms or a total of eight years if their initial term was less than two years. Additionally, the by-laws provide for an undergraduate and graduate student who are eligible to serve no more than two, one-year terms. Students are appointed by the Dean in consultation with the CLA Council” (p. 7, Constitution and Bylaws). In the past, a subcommittee of the Council has been formed to oversee this selection and recommendation process. The subcommittee, through department heads and council members, advertises the position, reviews the applicants, and recommends a representative to the Dean. Ideally, student representatives should be available to serve for at least one academic year. Finally, student representatives cannot serve simultaneously on the CLA College Council and a second college committee” (CLA Constitution and Bylaws, pp. 7-8). Restrictions Department Chairs and the Director of Interdisciplinary Programs are not eligible to serve on the College Council. Faculty cannot serve simultaneously on more than one of the following committees/bodies: College Council, University Senate, University and/or College Promotion and Tenure Committee, University and/or College Curriculum Committee, University and/or College Technology Committee, College Elections CLA Committee. Responsibilities of Council: The Council has the responsibility to make recommendations to the Dean of CLA on all matters (subject to the overriding authority of the University) which include, but are not limited to: 1 . Maintaining the quality of academic life and academic standards. 2. Advocating for the rights and privileges appropriate to the departments, faculty and students of the College. 3. Establishing procedures for determining membership in the standing committees. 4. Monitoring all Council committees to address those charges outlined in the Bylaws of the Council. 5. Supporting college-wide activities, facilities-use planning, and fund raising. 6. Evaluating the Dean, consistent with the procedures established by the Office of the Provost. 7. Participating in the selection of the Dean and Associate Dean as provided for by the Provost or Dean. Preferably, the Chairperson of the Council or a representative shall sit with a vote on their search or selection committees." (pp. 2-3, CLA Constitution and Bylaws) 1
