- Description
- Photograph of students in the Maryland State Normal School visiting Mt. Winans Park in Baltimore City in 1888 for lessons in botany. The class was led by George L. Smith, the Physics, Chemistry, and Natural History teacher at the Maryland State Normal School from 1875 until 1892, however, he is not in the photo. Smith was killed in a railroad accident in 1892, and the current Smith Hall science building at Towson University is named in his honor. Hester Stabler has been identified as the student in the last row, second from the right.
