Minutes of the Joint Session of Representatives of the Student Government Leaders of State-Supported Universities Friday, April 5, 1968 6:40 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Paul Sekulich, President of the Student Government Association at U.M.B.C. Two charts were submitted by Mr. Sekulich. Faculty Salary Increases (for Full Professors) Requested - $3,263,000 (60% obtained) Average Salary for 30 Schools 1962-63 ~1:-~i 196&- 68 $13,376 $18,811 Maryland $11,598 -10,, 500 $17,819 Difference $1,778 $ 992 Mr. Sekulich stated that Maryland has the 17th highest per capita income in the country. However, the State is the 39th highest state in educational spending. Facts Sheet - U. of Md. Total Budget $13,000,000 - Budget increase $9,436,677 - From State funds $ 3,500,000 - Granted increase $ 5,936,667 - Denied Approximately $650,000 restored by legislature. At this time, two sheets were distributed to the delegates. 1. A temporary proposal. 2. The text of Mr. Sekulich's remarks stating the reasons and purposes for a one day sympathy strike. Mr. Sekulich continued by stating: 1. Austerity budget is the bare minimum. 2. State wide school system should protest in unity against the Governor and the legislature. 3. All education programs were squashed. 4. Bowie State College - physical plant system very, very, poor. 5. Dr. Elkins stated that the University of Maryland is operating to a limited extent now. It does not seem possible on this budget that the University of Maryland will be able to go forward and progress.
