President, the university community is assembled for graduation commencement. Good morning. I welcome you to this 138th commencement exercise

celebrating our top priority, the academic attainment of our students. Please stand for the National Anthem. We'll be led in singing by Miss Angelica Evans, who today is

receiving a Bachelor of Music with a voice concentration. What's so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched

were so gallantly streaming and the rockets' red glare The bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. May we observe a moment of silence in memory of members of our university community who died this past year.

The flags on display represent the 37 countries of students graduating from Towson this spring and the flags of more than 69 other countries representing our current international student population.

As you can see, an education at Towson University not only serves our region and the state of Maryland, but also reaches across the nation and around the world. We are fortunate to have with us the Vice President of Towson's

Alumni Board, Lone Azola, who will bring words of welcome from the Alumni Association. Lone, as a Towson University alumna, I have the honor today of representing all that lies ahead of you.

As a graduate of the Class of 1968, I can tell you from my own personal experience that there are many wonderful opportunities and possibilities that await you on the other side of these doors.

You often hear references to entering the real world, but I truly believe your Towson education is as real as it gets. Thanks to our wonderful faculty, you have learned to become problem solvers, critical thinkers, leaders, educators,

friends, and good citizens. As a university, we have challenged you, taught you, and mentored you. I know you will agree with me that your time here was about

much more than classes and exams. It was about planning for your future and once you walk out of these doors today, remember that your while your time at Towson University is over for the moment, you will always be a

member of the Towson University family. Today you become an official member of the Alumni Association. We are lawyers, doctors, actors, business leaders, teachers,

computer analysts, scientists, politicians, healthcare providers, just to name a few. We live in California and New York and Europe and Asia and everywhere in between.

We are proud of each other and we are proud of our association with Towson University. We know that your achievements, like those before you and those that will follow, will only add to the reputation of Towson

University and enhance the value of each of our degrees. On behalf of the more than 92,000 alumni who have preceded you, it is my privilege to congratulate you for your outstanding achievements and to welcome you as a member into the

Towson University Alumni Association. The Association is your resource for career networking, reunions, special benefits, and social events. I am sure that many of you here today may even have been the

recipients of Alumni Association scholarships or grants. And as alumni, it is our responsibility to give back so that the next generation of students may have the same opportunities and experiences that all of us have shared.

To quote Elizabeth Harchy, president of the Class of 1931, who at age 95 still serves in this capacity today and remains an active volunteer for the Alumni Association. Quote, the school offered me an opportunity that changed my life

forever and made me who I am today. I am forever grateful and will always think of Towson as my family. End of quote.

I extend to you the same. Please think of Towson University as your family forever. To each and everyone of you, my sincerest congratulations on

behalf of the Alumni Association and have a great life. Thank you Missus Zola. May I ask those in the audience who are already alumni of the university to please stand?

It's it's a great group and if any of you were my students, I hope I didn't flunk you. We thank you for your continued loyalty and support. The honorary degree is awarded to a member of the Academy who

has made a significant contribution to higher education, or to a member of the business community who has made notable contributions to the University, or to a member of the local community who has been recognized as a major

contributor to the welfare of the community. The award of the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters results from a rigorous process in which one person is selected by a university committee, passed to the President, who recommends

this person to the Chancellor, who then sends it to the Board of Regents, where the person is approved. Today we honor Miss Molly Smith, a candidate for the honorary degree, the Doctor of Humane Letters.

Will Miss Smith join us at the podium? Molly Smith, you have been described as being like the earth, like a quiet ocean, and like a volcano right before its eruption.

This combination of groundedness and fire exhilaration has served you well as Artistic Director of Arena Stage, the largest of the Washington, DC area's not-for-profit theaters, attracting more than a quarter million patrons and 25,000

students each year. An enthusiastic participant in the international theatre community, you've circled the globe twice, gleaning the best of what you experienced and arranging artistic exchanges.

Your passion for the universal communication of theatre arts propelled not only your professional endeavors, but greatly enriched all the communities you have served. For nearly 20 years, you led the Perseverance Theatre in Juneau,

AK, directing more than 50 productions and transforming that theater into a national presence. During your tenure there, you open the process of creation and participation to all the varied peoples of your community and

explore both classics and the new works through an Alaskan eye. Associates who travelled with you during your international travels recall vivid images of your interaction with a Flemish

director in Rotterdam, with a young Polish director in Warsaw who may have been a bit too sure of himself, with a simple and humble woman of the theatre in Kenya and with a tortured Slavic soul.

You reached out to all of these individuals with the same genuine caring. It's because of your intense interest in all the world's cultures that your audience's perceptions have been expanded

and their experiences have been enriched. Molly Smith It is simply wonderful to be in the presence of such an artistic leader with such persistence, passion, creativity, courage and sensitivity combined with

generosity and compassion. Truly, you reflect the best of the artist and the educator. You are the epitome of theatre. It is my honor and privilege on behalf of Towson University to

bestow upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Thank you. Well, what a thrill it is for me to be before you today on this

wonderful occasion. Good morning to President Jones, Provost Leather, trustees, faculty, students, family, friends, and most especially the graduates here at Towson's University.

I'm delighted to join you, to truly join you in celebration of Towson's commencement of the Class of 2003. Congratulations, graduates. What a wonderful moment.

What a wonderful day. I remember when I graduated from college, I kept waiting for the future, when my life would begin, when I'd be directing plays, when I'd start my theater, when I'd teach, when

I'd have a family. But the truth is that life was happening all around me if I just lift my head up high enough to notice it. Because each day of fully lived is a wonderful eternity when one

really notices and engages in everything that's happening around us. We're alive to the world and our place in it. However, this living fully every moment of every day is difficult

and challenging. I first became aware of the sacredness of the present moment when I was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. I was nose to nose with death and in survival mode.

I was scared, I was weak, I was dependent on friends and family, and suddenly I was also completely and outrageously alive to the present moment because I didn't know how many moments were left for me.

Was there even a future for me? I had to live fully in each second, each exchange, each realization. The look of the mist hanging over the mountain out my window.

The concerned look on my mother's face. The calm hand of the doctor on my arm. The lush shape of the flower sitting next to my bed. The exuberant laugh of Suzanne on the telephone.

The gift of breast cancer. How odd and wonderful to call something as terrifying as cancer a gift. But I realized my connectedness to the world and began to live

each day fully. But you don't have to wait until something tragic happens to you. You can do it right now. Look across at family and friends.

Cherish them. Look into their eyes. Grab this moment and live in the reality of now. Because it's all that really matters.

It's all that we are promised in this moment. There is a perfect eternity. As I look out on your faces, I can feel the pure pleasure and exhilaration of this moment finally graduating.

An incredible accomplishment and one which will open doors for you throughout your life. You now have the key. Without the degree, it's so much more difficult.

You have something else today that many people would like to possess, A fire in the belly. This fire in the belly is about your passion, your chosen field of work, and I'm here to tell you that you need to protect it,

fuel it, feed it with ideas of goal and goals because many would like to take it away from you. Oh, you know the signs. The people who throw water on an idea before it's had a chance to

grow. The ones who would rather give destructive rather than constructive criticism because then they can try and steal a piece of your fire.

But it's up to you to protect the fire from all comers, to hold it in your belly. Because those dreams you have today is what will get you up out of bed each morning.

It's what you can take through the difficult days as you pursue your lifelong goals. So all you graduates out there, maybe you don't yet have a job. Maybe you're worried about starting a family.

Maybe you don't know what to do next. But instead of living in the future, live in the eternity of now, this moment. You have passion.

You're on fire with your ideas and dreams. Live them each moment of every day and you will have a wonderful and a useful life. A useful life in this ever changing world.

As Adelaide Stevenson said, it's not the years in your life, but the life in your years that count. Thank you and congratulations on your great accomplishments. Carpe Diem.

Thank you, Miss Smith, we are genuinely honored to have you become a member of the Townsend community. We'll ask for a donation later. It is now my pleasure to introduce Miss Lisa Pauline

Rodman. Miss Rodman is graduating from the College of Education with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education. Miss Rodman has been on the Dean's list every semester while

at Towson and is graduating summa cum Laude. She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society and Education. Miss Rodman recently had the opportunity to represent the

Ellicott City Professional Development School by Co presenting at the National Professional Development School Conference held at Townsend University. She received the College Buddy Director of the Year award from

the Best Buddies of Maryland, where she works closely with students with disabilities and their teachers to match them in friendship with non disabled college peers. After graduation, Miss Rodman will begin her career as a

special educator in a local elementary school and continue her commitment to working both in the schools and the community with people who have cognitive disabilities. Please welcome Miss Rodman.

Thank you. President Jones, Provost Leather, Miss Smith, honored guests, families and fellow graduates. After I received the news that I'd be speaking in front of all

of you, I took some time to reflect about my four years at Towson and what they have meant to me. One of the things that I've learned is that there's a lot of flexibility involved when being in a brand new program.

The Elementary Middle School special Education program at Towson began last year and there's only one former graduate of the program the past two years, Carol Portland, Elena Schneider and myself.

The self named special Ed cohort had been a part of a developing program. Doctor Fuster often referred to us as The Pioneers of the program whenever we really felt like the Guinea pigs.

I must say that looking back, I would not have chosen any other program at Towson. Another thing that I reflected on about education at Towson is what a great experience it has been being able to really get to

know your professors and to have them be able to get to know you in return. In an extreme case, our mini cohort of three were the only students in two classes with Doctor Fuster.

As you can imagine, in the class of four, we got to know each other really well. She even called herself my university mom. I also feel that at Towson, students in my major, as well as

other majors are given the opportunity to have authentic job related experiences, whether it be student teaching for education majors or other types of apprenticeships or internships for other majors.

Over the past four years, I feel that I've learned a lot about people and about life. Standing here today I can look out and see hundreds of faces. The one thing that I know that we have in common is that today

we are beginning the next phase of our life. I personally know some of you, I've had classes with many of you, but there are hundreds that I do not know. But I can guarantee that each of you possesses a special talent

OR quality that makes you unlike anybody else. I believe that each of us has uniqueness within ourselves that we contribute to our friends, families, Co workers, students, and other lives that we touch.

I've also learned the importance of approaching everything with a positive attitude. Just take a moment to think about how much better things are when you approach them positively.

Have you ever made someone's day by telling him or her something negative? I can guarantee you that people benefit from positive attitudes, not negative ones.

During my student teaching experience, I learned quickly that focusing on the negative behavior of students made the behaviors even worse. Constantly praising good behavior equal better behavior

from all students. I would like to challenge all of you to get to know the people around you and their interests and encourage them. Remember, encouraging others rarely has a negative effect.

Earlier I mentioned how all people are unique, but another thing that I've learned is that people are more similar than you would guess a first glance. All people, regardless of age, race, culture, or disability,

have the desire to belong. I've had the opportunity to be involved with a group of students who have taught me so much about the importance of friendship and how it changes lives.

I've been fortunate enough to work with the Cass University Outreach Program for the past four years. This program enables 19 to 21 year old special education students to obtain job and life skills that they need to

transition into the community after receiving a certificate of completion from high school. Many of you have probably seen my students on campus working in the post office, in Downing Halls and the daycare center.

After working with them and their teacher, Missus Sandy Fisher, I quickly learned that I wanted to be a special education teacher. From them, I've learned that we need to take the discs out of

disabilities and focus on the abilities. We need to look at what people can do rather than what they can't do. The students I've worked with have proved that they can

positively contribute their skills and abilities into all areas of the community. We should all look at ourselves with the same positive attitude and focus on the abilities that each one of us has within us.

Another rewarding experience that I've had at Towson is being involved with the Best Buddies program, which matches a student with disabilities with one without disabilities and a friendship.

It's been a wonderful life changing experience. I absolutely cherish the two buddies that I came to know and love. No matter where my life leads me after graduation, they will be a

part of my life. I believe that people with disabilities should be completely included in the society, not just in the public schools, but in jobs, in all aspects of of community life.

I encourage each of you to advocate having people with cognitive disabilities to be included in your workplace. You never know how much a person with a disability can touch your life until you experience it.

I would like to take a moment to thank the people who have touched my life. Thanks to all the teachers who inspired me to join this profession.

The special education department at Towson for their dedication to the new program, to the special education team at Saint John's Lane Elementary School, for providing such wonderful experiences for me this year and for making me feel a part of the

team. My friends who've been such a great support system. And this is Sandy Fisher, who's been a great mentor and friend to me.

I would especially like to thank John, who has helped me this the best senior year that I could have imagined, and my family for 21 years of constant support, encouragement and love. I would like to close my speech with a story.

A young man was walking down a deserted beach just before dawn. In the distance he saw a frail old man. As he approached the old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them to the sea.

The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw starfish from the sand to the water. He asked him why do you spend so much time and energy during what seems to be a waste of time.

The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. But there must be thousands of beaches and millions of starfish, exclaimed the young man.

How can your effort make any difference? The old man looked down at the small starfish in his hand and has he gently tossed it to the safety of the sea? He said it makes a difference to this one.

As we begin the next phase of our lives, let us, the class of 2003, be like the old man and seek to make a difference and seize the opportunity to touch the lives of those around us. Thank you.

Congratulations and good luck. Thank you, Miss Rodman. This is one of the happiest days of the year on our campus. We celebrate first and foremost the graduates of whom we are so

all so proud. There are many here today who share in their accomplishments. There is in particular one very special group whose contributions deserve full recognition.

We have the finest graduating class in Maryland because Towson University has the very best faculty in Maryland. Will the faculty of the University please rise? Joining me on stage today are leaders of the University.

Through their dedication and expertise, they enable the success of our students. On the 1st row are the officers of the University, those responsible facilitating our academic programs, members of

the Board of Visitors of the University Senate, of the Alumni Association of the Student Government Association, and all of the American Association of University Professors. Will these colleagues please rise so that we make sure our

appreciation for your leadership? I would also like to to thank the faculty who are serving as faculty and student marshals at this ceremony. We thank you for your service.
