Commencement. Good afternoon. I welcome you to the 137th Commencement exercise celebrating the University's top priority, the academic

attainment of its students. Please stand for our National Anthem. We'll be LED in singing by Teresa Rd. Bowser, a graduating music major with a voice concentration.

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn's early night, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming, and the

rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was in there. The Please be seated. The flags on display represent the 37 countries of students

graduating from Towson this spring. As you can see, an education at Towson University not only serves our region and the state of Maryland, but also reaches across the nation and around the globe.

Please join me in welcoming Lawrence M Merlis, a member of the University Board of Visitors, who will bring greetings from that board. Thank you Doctor Jones, Lerner, Deans and faculty members of the

administration, family members and friends, and most importantly, the newest graduates of Towson University, members of the Class of 2002. On behalf of the Board of Visitors, please accept our

sincere congratulations on your accomplishment. It is an accomplishment in which you should be proud and your family should be proud. You have earned the opportunity to pause at that seat at this

time and truly take notice of what you have done. You deserve to celebrate, you deserve to reflect, and you deserve to enjoy this time in your life. You have attained the goal that you, your family and Towson

University set several years ago. Some of you may be surprised that you were here, some of you may be relieved, and some of you may be excited about what lies ahead, but all of you should be proud.

Capture that emotion because you will want to visit it often in the years ahead. Whatever your future holds a profession, more schooling, a family, or even a break, realize that life is not a dress

rehearsal. When you look back two years, five years, or 10 years from now and ask yourself the question, what difference have I made? Your answer should give you the same feeling of pride as you

feel today. The only way to get there is to love what you do and do what you love. And when you do that with other people you care about, whether

it is colleagues at work, neighbors, family, a spouse, or a friend, you will feel that you've made a difference. Feel a sense of accomplishment, and feel that same sense of pride as you make your choices in the next stages of your life.

To reach that point where you can look back and ask yourself the question, what difference have I made? Remember a quote from that Great American philosopher, Doctor Seuss?

You have brains in your head and feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. Congratulations. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr. Merlis. We're also fortunate to have with us the President of Towson's Alumni Board, Mr.

Brian Thaler, who will bring words of welcome from the Alumni Association members of the Class of 2002. I bring you greetings on behalf of the more than 90,000 alumni who have preceded you.

We salute you for all your perseverance in all of these undertakings. As alumni, we are enriched by each other's achievements and by Towson's.

We are a family. You can count on us and we will count on you. You are now officially a member of the Towson University Alumni Association.

We encourage you to come back and share your successes with us. You have a new and important role, which is to help make Townsend an even stronger and more nationally recognized

university. Congratulations. Thank you, Mr. Thaler, let me ask those of you who are in the audience who are

already Towson alums to please raise your hands. A wonderful number. It is now my pleasure to introduce Miss Jennifer Joan Puglaci.

Miss. Miss Puglaci is graduating from the College of Science and Mathematics with a degree in Biology. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Golden Key National and

Beta Beta Beta biological natural honor societies. She will be inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in the fall. She's made the Dean's least list each semester.

She plans a future in optometry or in a science related field, possibly forensic science. Miss Puglisi, thank you President Jones, Provost Leather, honored guests, faculty, family and friends.

For me, our graduation day is a day of reflection and celebration. Before we celebrate, let's look back on some of our university memories.

Think back to the first day of class. I remember being nervous and scared. The amount of reading and homework I had to do was overwhelming.

Some of you had to adjust the dorm life and some, like me, had to commute and deal with the headache of obtaining a parking space. I commuted the Towson from Harford County.

I woke up every day at 5:30 AM in order to get to campus by 7:00 AM. Since the library didn't open that early, I studied in an empty classroom.

Many students who didn't get here early had a fight for a parking space, or, as you all know, follow someone to his or her space as they left campus. Ah, the memories.

My fellow commuters often thought that the students living on campus had it easier, but friends and classmates told me that it ain't necessarily true. To be sure, living on campus did eliminate the morning commute,

but living in a dorm had its challenges, too. Being cramped in a small dorm, sharing a bathroom or getting an unreasonable roommate could be just as trying as hunting for a parking spot.

Whether a commuter or resident, we all had the intelligence and the strength of character to persevere and to attain the success that brings us here today. Was it easy?

Not for me. I did experience some good times acing an exam, having several awesome, inspiring instructors, making great friends, and making the Dean's list.

Bad times? Yes, I had a few of those too. I received disappointing exam grades when I thought I had done well.

I took a few boring and unchallenging classes. And I worried about my financial aid, whether it would arrive in time to pay for tuition and the cost of some very expensive science textbooks.

And I haven't even mentioned the challenges of having a social life at Towson. The highlight of my time at Towson came during the semester. To be honest, I often dreamed that I would be the commencement

speaker. So when I got the phone call telling me that I had been selected, I was surprised and quite thrilled. I was asked simply to talk about my educational experience at

Towson and what it meant to me. I've shared some of the experiences we have in common. Now let me tell you more about myself. I think many of you can relate to my story.

My most difficult class was genetics. Genetics is a required core course within the biology major. As it turned out, I wasn't doing particularly well in the class, but I couldn't drop it.

I needed it for the major, and if I dropped it, I would have to double up with another lab course next semester. Sound familiar? But I remain committed and got weekly help from the instructor

who worked diligently with me. To my surprise, I got an A in the course. I faced another hurdle to my chosen career. Although I had declared biology as my major from the start, I

wasn't sure if it was the right field for me. Believe it or not, I had difficulties doing laboratory work. As many of you know, a lab experiment doesn't always work

out the way the textbook describes it or as the instructor explains it. It was so frustrating at times that I seriously thought about changing my major, even dropping out of school entirely.

But I stayed focused, and with the help from my instructors, I gained confidence in the lab. I began to perform in the lab with precision and more importantly, an open mind.

Once this happened, I knew that I had chosen the right field. Taking courses and other disciplines only reinforced my feeling about biology. To be sure, these disciplines were interesting and often

challenging, but none offered me the sense of accomplishment that biology did. Science is not black and white, rather it is dynamic and ever changing, filled with new challenges and discoveries.

Biology and Towson University transformed me from a nervous freshman to a confident senior, ready and willing to meet the challenges the world has for me. I hope your journey here has been equally transforming, not

only in providing you with intellectual stimulation and curiosity, but also as a journey of personal growth. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the people who provided the financial, psychological, social and moral

support that helped me succeed. For me, my family helped a great deal. My mom always proof read my papers, my dad encouraged me never to give up, my brother taught me how to balance a heavy

workload, and my boyfriend gave me the confidence to make it through a lot of tough courses. I thank each of them for their encouragement and support. In addition to my family, I must mention the positive influence

of several of my instructors. To Professor Susan Gressens, Brian Masters, Scott Johnson, GAIL Gasperich, and Joe Abate, thank you all for your help and confidence in me and for making me a better student and better

biologist. To Towson University, thank you for providing me with a wonderful education. Our university has been in the news a lot lately, but what you

don't read is how much Towson University has encouraged its students to grow and develop. The assistance and encouragement I received from classmates, faculty, student services, financial aid, and elsewhere

enabled me to continue and succeed not only as a student but as a person. The knowledge and skills we have learned at Towson University and the values of perseverance, integrity, compassion, and

friendship we will take with us wherever we go. They will be a part of us forever. We have all fantasized about today and we have finally made it to this moment.

What an honor for me to attend Towson University and especially being chosen to speak to you today. To my fellow graduates of the class of 2002, I wish each of you successful, rewarding and fulfilling lives.

Put your talents to use in the world and the world will become a better place. Congratulations. Thank you.

This is one of the happiest days of the year on our campus. We celebrate first and foremost, of course, the graduates of whom we are all so proud. There are many others here today who share their accomplishments.

There is in particular one very special group whose contributions deserve full recognition, the faculty. We have the finest graduating class in Maryland because Townsend University has the very best faculty.

Will the faculty of the University please rise, including our Emeritus faculty graduates. Please join me in showing our appreciation for this outstanding group of dedicated and caring mentors and teachers.

Joining us on stage today are leaders of the University. To their dedication and expertise, they enable the success of our students. On the 1st row are the officers of the University, those

responsible for sustaining our academic programs, members of the Board of Visitors of the University Senate, of the Alumni Association of the Student Government Association and the American Association of University Professors.

Will these colleagues please, please rise so that we may show our appreciation for their leadership? I would also like to the fact to thank the faculty at this ceremony who are acting as faculty and student marshals.

We thank you for your service. Please join me now as we thank those who have especially made possible the achievements of today's graduates. First with the mothers and fathers of our graduates, please

I'm going to depart from the script a minute and say a couple of personal words. I am finishing my 36th year at Towson University. Every year has been a privilege I feel now as I felt the first

day I set foot on this campus. It is the students who bring to us our distinction, what they bring to us, eager to discover when they arrive, how they help us discover while they're here, what they contribute to society

in the world after they leave us is the heart of our distinction and the heart of our pride. And on behalf of the faculty and the staff and the the students who have passed in the students future, I want to thank those
