1972 SGA press release

S.G.A. NEWS RELEASE LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE S.G.A. [handwritten in right margin of first paragraph: not true] On Monday, October 2nd, the Academic Council amended the calendar by approving the motion for the suspension of all classes on Election Day, November 7, 1972. I personally talked to Dr. Fisher the following day and received his assurance as did Hank Mumaw, the president of teh Faculty Association, that this bill would not be vetoed by his office. It has now come to my attention, through a letter addressed to all the members of the college community, stating that President Fisher is now not vetoing this bill but merely changing it to meet his own philosophy of education. In doing so he has said in effect that the Academic Council has acted [underlined by hand: irrationally] and [underlined by hand: without due consideration]. [handwritten in right margin of first parageaph: just because I disagree?] [handwritten in left margin of second paragraph: A good point but never before questioned] I would submit that President Fisher doesn't have the right to change a motion passed by the Academic Council. He can merely veto or accept the ruling of that governing body. As a member of the Academic Council, I deeply resent the accusation that I acted outside the perimeter of consciencious behavior. In short the issue is now paramount concerning whether or not Dr. Fisher has the power to change legislation passed by the Academic Council. I feel that at the next Academic Council meeting this question will be answered. As a result of his action there will be a large segment of the college population that will be denied the chance to vote. It should be obvious that evening students can not work, eat, attend classes, and vote. [handwritten in left margin of final paragraph: Can Evening students vote?] Finally, I suggest to my constituents that the original proposal of the Academic Council should be followed without regard to President Fisher's action and that I will personally work towards having President Fisher make a decision one way or the other as to the original proposal of the Academic Council.
