1970 SGA Publication Policy Proposal

PUBLICATIONS POLICY PROPOSAL Open Letter to Senators March 17, 1970 Dear Fellow Students: At this time, it is of critical importance to: 1. Evaluate the standards and functions of the various present and future publications of the Student Government Association; 2. Edjust the discrepancy between concent and direction in relation to effectiveness of communication, insofar as to provide an accurate representation of the interests, opinions and activities of all members of the student community, and 3. Collate the philosophy of the college as a public institution for the pursuit of higher learning and that of the rights and freedoms of its members in maintaining that institution's integrity by means of a democratic, self-expressive, and informed student body. In evaluation, adjustment and collation of the philosophies and practices involved in maintaining higher standards and more relative values of student publications (which are assumed to accurately and faithfully represent Towson's academic environment), it is inevitable that teh dynamics of students' publicarions be embodied in policy. Thus, the policy which is to be presented has been drawn up in hopes that it may guide those individuals assuming responsibility for the goals and production of publications and, more importantly, imbue their actions with a philosophy of principles and practices for which those persons are to be responsible and by which their work is justifiable. It should be clear that this is a proposal and that what is sought is approval and support. Please reconcile the points and issues contained with your personal beliefs and those objectives for which you fuel the academic community must strive. My main concern is that future publications' planning may be purposive and relevant to the student body at large. With an approved policy and generous foresight, I feel that more students will involve themselves in communicating with other college communities and educational agencies (local communities,
