1964 letter from Earle T. Hawkins to Kenneth Masters

Box #314 Towson State College Dear Mr. Masters: Although we have discussed on several occasions the matter of the Student Government resolution passed by the Senate on September 29, 1964, I have not sent a formal statement in writing which I think I should do for the record. I should like to express again, as I have many times orally, my concern to discover that otherwise responsible and mature students at Towson State College would think it appropriate to send letters to the Governor, the Board of Trustees, and the press concerning campus grievances before giving me an opportunity to consider them and attempt to resolve them. May I say most emphatically that no constuctive purpose was served by sending letters to persons other than officials on the campus. The same purpose would have been served (and served more courteously and considerately) if the communication had merely been presented to me as a serious action of the Student Senate. I am embarrassed furthermore for the SGA to realize that the Trustees, the press, and the Governor received "dittoed" communications containing obvious errors in fact and errors in English. Now let me comment on the specific items: 1. The matter of the possibility of reimbursing student teachers for lunches during the period of their student teaching was referred to the office of teh Trustees and has been reviewed by them. We recently received word that it would be in order for the college to reimburse the students who find it necessary to miss lunches during the student teaching period. 2.
