Towson alumni, professor run for City Council On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the citizens of Baltimore City will gather to vote in the Primary Election. Candidates for mayor, City Council president, and comptroller are among the names voters will see on their ballots. Three Towson University alumni and one assistant professor are running to hold seats in the Baltimore City Council. Scott Carberry Alumnus, 5th District John Bullock Dayvon Love Assistant Professor, 9th District Alumnus, 8th District Frank Richardson Alumnus, 12th District Scott Carberry, a Baltimore City Council candidate for the 5th District, is new to the campaigning scene. “I've always been fascinated by politics," the Towson alumnus said. His interest started during the 1980 presidential election. For the first time in nearly 30 years, somebody new could be in the Baltimore City Council seat for the 9th District. Agnes Welch, a 27-year incumbent, retired in December, and her son, William "Pete" Welch, Jr., took over the seat for the remainder of the 2011 term. William Welch hopes to retain his position, but eight other candidates, more than in any other Baltimore district, are also in the race to put new blood in the seat for the first time in seven terms. Candidate for Baltimore City Council in the 8th District Dayvon Love has faced large-scale chal¬ lenges before. He was on the two-man Towson debate team that won the Cross Examination Debate Association National Championship in March 2008. As a candidate for the Baltimore City Council for the 12th District, Frank Richardson must beat seven others on Election Day Tuesday. Richardson said there are many factors in his life that have prepared him to become a member of the City Council. See VOTE, page 11
