She is away at college for the first time, her roommate has an annoying boyfriend who has declared their room as a perma-nent residence, and the cafeteria food is beginning to scare her. Sara is worried about classes and about having HIV. She met a guy at a party last weekend and, getting lost in the heat of the In the past 12 months, we estimate that another 3 million men, women, and children have been infected with HIV. Dr. Michael H. Merson, Executive Director of the Global Programme on AIDS moment, had uprotected sex with him. Sara has just gotten tested and is in for a long wait for the results - results that could change her life. ( human immunodeficien-cy virus) is a disease that harms the immune system, and causis the body to produce antibodies against the virus. When someone gets a test for HIV, it is to detect these HIV fighting antibodies. A positive result means the virus is present. While virtually everyone knows how HIV is contracted, not everyone is practicing the pre-vention techniques taught by health care representatives. Dr. Michael H. Merson, execu-tive director of the Global Programme on AIDS of the World Health Organization, said the number of people with AIDS is rapidly increasing. ""In the past 12 months, we esti-mate that another 3 million men, women, and children have been infected with HIV,"" he said. ""The cumulative total stood at around 14 million a year ago. It now exceeds 17 million. Our estimates are conservative."" A college poll conducted by Glamour magazine found that 37 percent of women are having unsafe sex, 38 percent have dis-cussed HIV testing with a poten-tial partner, and only 21 percent have actually been tested for HIV. Because the disease is spreading so quickly, especially among younger people, prevention tips and testing are becoming widely available on college campuses. Betty D. Hollingsworth, the campus HIV coordinator at the Dowell Health Center and founder of the HIV testing pro-gram at Towson, helps students understand the ways-to prevent the disease. The center provides testing for students and faculty four days a week. Working With Your Body Type, Not Against It I know there are a lot of people out there who are ready to improve their fitness level and whip themselves into shape. I can see that the fear of putting on those extra winter pounds has sparked increasing motivation. But I also know that many of the people ready to get down to physical fitness business proba-bly have misconceptions about how they will acheive their goals, because all they see and hear from the mass media are exercise and weight control myths. First of all, when establishing fitness goals, you have to be real-istic. In other words, don't set yourself up for disappointment by planning to look like Mr. or Miss Universe after one month of eating a lot of salad and working out three days a week. In order to set realistic goals for yourself, you need to first deter-mine the maximum that your body type can do for you. And to do this, you need to know what body type you are. Generally, you are going to be one of three body types: ENDOMORPH - round, softer shape, short heavy legs, narrow shoulders and a large chest, weight usually concentrated in lower body (hips and ""Towson State is an aware school. The students know what AIDS is and how to prevent it,"" Hollingsworth said. The testing process at Towson State includes a pre-counseling session before the test and a post-counseling session after the results have returned from the lab. During the pre-counseling ses-sion, a counselor meets with the patient (who remains anony- A college poll conducted by Glamour magazine found that 37 percent of women are having unsafe sex, 38 percent have dis-cussed HIV testing with a potential partner, and only 21 percent have actually been tested for HIV, mous) and discusses the individ-ual's history, how he or she can prevent infection, and any ques-tions the patient might ask. Many individuals can have the characterisitics of a combination of two body types such as endo-meso or meso-ecto, but it is impossible to be ecto-endo. So basically, your genes are in control of the way you are going to look. What you goal must be is to look the best for your body type that you can. See WBGHT, page 11 "
