Others choose to speed up their academic careers by enrolling in a Minimester class. However, many departments offer limited or no course choices in Minimester classes, causing prob-lems for students hoping to get ahead in their major or graduate within four years. ""The University above all would love to see that students graduate on time,"" Tom Basuray, associate vice president for decision and support services, said. ""That is a very impor-tant and significant issue for us. That's our goal, but in actuality some constraints may show up."" Many courses offered during a reg-ular semester, such as science labs, cannot be taught during Minimester, Basuray said. Minimester is a very short and intense period of time for the University to offer many classes, Basuray explained. In a regular 15- week semester, a three-credit course meets for a total 45 hours. ""So you have to cram 45 total con-tact hours between the instructor and the students. That is a require-ment we have to follow in terms of the state requirements of courses and credits and also the accreditation requirements we have to undertake,"" Basuray said. Basuray compared learning to working out, stressing that as one must give muscles a chance to rest between workouts, students need time to think about what they learn outside of the classroom. The purpose of any instruction should be learning, he said.
