tl19890302-000 "Vol. 82 No. 17 ""Required Reading"" March 2, 1989 ; Published weekly by the students of Towson Ruggers face last season on Burdick Football club practices in shadow of construction plan by Brian P. Gallagher Sports reporter Despite a rapidly developing program, the Towson State Rugby Football Club will not be calling Burdick Field home for long, as plans for a multi-level parking garage on the site continue to materialize. In fact, the inevitable construction may jeopardize the future of Towson State's rugby team. ""What the administration is saying is 'To hell with the club sports,' "" says Tim O'Donnell, a senior forward and former club president. ""It's really an atrocity that they are taking away Burdick Field from the stu-dent body and the club sports,"" he adds. ""The construction will be disruptive to club sports, but they'll have to work that out with the intramural department,"" says Vice President of Business and Finance, Donald McCulloh. At the moment, con-struction is slated to begin in late March and targeted for completion in September. With the idea of the possible extinction of the club imbedded in their minds, the team members are busy preparing for their March 11 season opener against Drexel University. Although the team is relatively young and inexperienced, several key re-turning players could possibly provide the necessary ingredients for a championship season. ""Ideally, we want to secure the top spot in our conference,"" says O'Donnell. But ac-cording to head coach Chris Schmit, a TSU alumnus, a second-place finish, which would assure the team of a playoff berth, is more likely. ""A little experience can go a long way,"" says Schmit. ""If the guys can gel we can easily finish second in our conference."" Leading this year's edition of the rugby club are seniors Alec Klinghoffer and Tim O'Donnell, junior Larry Whalen, and sopho-more Bruce Robertson, a conference all-star. Club president James Arthur, senior Marc Ferrante, junior Tom Burbridge, and sophomore Tom Hudson will help solidify the lineup.
