Perkins, the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, was introduced as Towson's next UW-Green Bay chancellor to take office in July, take University to 'the next level' Adam S. Reisinger The 7'owerlight When University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Dr. Mark L. Perkins first made contact with Towson's presidential search committee, it was to recommend someone else for the job. But 10 months after that initial contact, Perkins found himself in a different situation: being introduced as Towson's 11th president at a press conference Tuesday. ""I think Towson University has the opportunity to become a premier place where learning occurs and I think that recogni-tion nationally is one of the goals that we will have and can achieve,"" Perkins said. ""You've done extraordinary work already on that. We need to get that word out and build on that work and build on the extraordi-nary academic foundation of this University."" A standing-room only crowd in the University Union's Potomac .Lounge watched as search committee chairman Gerard Gaeng, along with University System of Maryland Chancellor Donald N. Langenberg and Board of Regents chairman Nathan A. Chapman, introduced Perkins to the Towson community. Perkins, who served as chan-cellor at Wisconsin-Green Bay for seven years, was selected from four finalists submitted to the Board of Regents less than one month ago. Chapman said Perkins' expe-rience at Green Bay � the sec-ond largest member of the University of Wisconsin system � made him a desirable choice for Towson. ""One of the things, if you look at the similarities of the campus-es, between Green Bay and Wisconsin [Madison], obviously he's a guy who has the kind of experience we're looking for from that perspective,"" Chapman said. Gaeng said Perkins' ability. to make Wisconsin-Green Bay a nationally-recognized institu-tion within a state system helped the committee believe he could do the same at Towson. ""I think that among the many factors was that he was able to Chris Henry/Ths Towerlight president Tuesday morning. reposition the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and improve the overall status with-in the state and within the sys-tem,"" he said. ""He also had a reputation as a team-builder who was able to work within the structure of the institution being part of a statewide system."" In his seven years at the helm at Wisconsin-Green Bay; Perkins increased funding for the University from both the state government and endowments. Over the past seven years he increased the University's total endowments from $2.46 million to $10.75 million by the Fall 2000 semester. However, Dr. Howard Cohen, UW-Green Bay's provost, said Perkins' biggest contributions were the ones that improved the school's status.
