TL20060406-01 "Mike Fila Senior Editor Alison McCartney, director of international studies, has been gone from her desk for only one hour, and already she has 24 new e-mails in her inbox, all related to ICONS, or International Conference on Negotiation Simulation. She teaches the class alongside peer James Hardin in the political sci-ence department, and her life, she says, will be pretty consumed by it for the next five weeks. Its a lot of fun but its quite exhausting, she said only a few days after the simulation began. This class is in a field that applies classroom knowledge to real world situations. In ICONS, students are divided into different departments within the class, which, as a whole, acts as the foreign ministry of a for-eign country, McCartney explained. Bureau chiefs students who have completed the class successfully from the year before come back to run the groups and lead the groups in every aspect of the class, she said. The students propose and create policy, which is then introduced into the simulation, where students across the United States and abroad deliberate with one another, each university representing a different country in the global community. As part of the simulation, stu-dents debate with student groups from all over the worldsome of these groups are in foreign countries and I think that a unique ben-efit is not only communicating with other Americans but communicat-ing with people in other countries, McCartney added.
