October 8, 2009, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Towson University--University Union
Rooms 314, 315, 316
A Day of Retreat for creating a sustainable, replicable model for empowering the authentic voices of at-risk girls for the Girls Task Force of Baltimore City
This this workshop-retreat, participants will experience a model of writing in community thriving in the Cincinnati area since 1996 and supporting the lives of a diverse population of girls and young women ages 8-25.
YWWf(a)C is not just about writing for me. It's about people, confidence, and freedom of speech. I list these things because the way I look at them now is different than it was three years ago. I am changing, evolving, becoming something new, and Young Women Writing for (a) Change is helping me grow up to be a strong, confident woman, which is exactly what I want to be.
Correna Kuhl, age 13
Participants will create themselves as a community of practice for working in a sustainable way with girls, all of whom are at risk for losing the ability to speak and act authentically and wisely.
The morning will be spent sharing stories of ourselves as girls (men who atten will share stories of themselves as boys), in the belief that both writing and sharing these stories will help us move from "working with" to "working on" girls, as we claim the lost stories of our own young lives. Participants will "learn by doing" the strategies and methods of Young Women Writing for (a) Change (R)
In the afternoon participants will be introduced to specific themes, skills, and leadership/group process values for creating writing communities with girls. Format will include writing, lecture, discussion, and take-homematerials for immediate use and adaptation
Preparation and what to bring:
1. Bring a photograph of yourself as a girl (or boy) between the ages of 6 and 12
2. Wear comfortable clothes, even less formal than business casual, if you are able.
