- Description
- Photograph of The Cottage which was razed to make room for Smith Hall. To the left is the area of land which would be developed as The Glen. The cottage was originally built as the summer home for Richard Gittings, State's Attorney for Baltimore County in the mid-1800's. A Mr. Allen bought the house and 24 acres prior to 1908. He sold it to the Maryland State Normal School. It was primarily used as a residence for campus faculty and staff, and briefly as a men's dormitory in 1939/1940. The health center also moved here from Newell Hall in 1954. The house was razed in the early 1960's in order to make room for a new science building (Smith Hall).
