Statement by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. about the agreement between Major League Baseball and the Baltimore Orioles, 2005?

STATEMENT BY GOVERNOR ROBERT L. EHRLICH, JR. ABOUT THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL AND THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES “I am pleased that an agreement between Major League Baseball, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Washington Nationals has finally been reached. The agreement safeguards one of Maryland’s greatest economic assets and clears the path for the Washington Nationals to begin their inaugural season. After many difficult months of negotiations, the agreement appears to be fair and equitable to the Orioles, the Nationals, and Major League Baseball. “The Maryland Stadium Authority worked closely with Peter Angelos as he negotiated with Major League Baseball to minimize the negative economic impact the new baseball team in Washington will have on the Orioles’ attendance, television audience, and market value. The Maryland Stadium Authority shares revenue with the Baltimore Orioles and, obviously, has an economic stake in the health and popularity with the team. “The agreement he has reached means Maryland soon will join New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles in being able to enjoy two major league baseball teams. Two baseball teams may also further unify the Washington and Baltimore communities. I anticipate healthy rivalries between the teams, their fan bases, and their supporters. “I congratulate and complement Mr. Angelos for protecting the Baltimore Orioles, now and in the future, and welcome the Washington Nationals to the one of America’s greatest sports communities. I look forward to both Opening Days.”
