I have been a persistent critic of the ethical lapses and embarrassing disclosures which have followed President Clinton during his years in office. Like you, I believe that it is appropriate for Congress to exercise its full oversight authority over the Clinton Administration in response to allegations of wrongdoing and unethical behavior by high governmental officials. As a member of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee during the 104th Congress, I participated in many such hearings. As a member of the House Banking Committee, I also participated in hearings into the so-called “Whitewater” affair. As you can imagine, I am deeply troubled by recent allegations of improper fundraising practices by the Clinton Administration and the Democratic National Committee. Attached is a column I recently wrote on this subject for your consideration. With respect to your desire to see a Scottish holiday, I question the wisdom of creating another costly federal holiday at a time when my colleagues on the Budget Committee and I are seeking to balance the federal budget by 2002. However, be assured I have enormous respect for Scottish-Americans and their many contributions to our nation. Once again, thank you for contacting me.
