The death of former White House Counsel Vince Foster in 1993 touched off a flurry of speculation over the circumstances surrounding his death. The initial investigation conducted by local law officials and federal authorities concluded that Mr. Foster’s death was a suicide. Others note that the specific circumstances of the crime scene— such as the physical location of Mr. Foster’s gun— are inconsistent with suicide. Like you, I am disturbed by allegations that Mr. Foster’s death was the result of foul play. Congress should take appropriate steps to determine whether these allegations have merit. Additionally, the actions of White House staffers in the hours immediately following Mr. Foster’s death have come under question. Sensitive documents— some pertaining to the so-called Whitewater scandal— were allegedly, and inappropriately, removed from Mr. Foster’s office by overzealous White House aides. These allegations are equally deserving of congressional scrutiny. As you may be aware, I participated in the Whitewater hearings held by the House Banking and Financial Services Committee last August. While the House hearings dealt with the financial aspects of the Whitewater deal, the Senate hearings— under the chairmanship of Senator A1 D’ Amato (R-NY)— are looking into other issues, such as the circumstances surrounding Mr. Foster’s death and the alleged removal of Whitewater documents from Mr. Foster’s office. Like you, I am anxious to learn what additional light the Senate investigation can shed on both these issues. Once again, thanks for contacting me regarding this matter.
