I believe we must be aggressive in educating the public about the federation’s attempt to buy Congress using $35 million taken from working families. As AFL-CIO President John Sweeney’s response to my article demonstrates, big labor bosses will quickly resort to tired cliches and dramatic appeals to class warfare when they are confronted in a factual manner. Here are some excerpts from Sweeney’s article: “We will use the money to tell the truth about members of Congress who voted to tear the heart out of Medicare, Medicaid, education, and college loans in order to finance another tax cut for the rich.” “(Republicans) tried to destroy workplace health and safety protection, wage standards, and environmental protection at the bidding of their corporate patrons.” “(C)onservative politicians, big business, and the super-rich conspired over the past 20 years to loot the U. S. Treasury through corporate tax giveaways and tax cuts for the wealthy.” I strongly encourage all my Republican colleagues— especially those who have been targeted by the AFL-CIO— to help me correct the record.
