Our new Speaker, Dennis Hastert (R-IL), is the right man at the right time to do the job. He arrived at a time of stalled Republican leadership and agenda. By drawing upon his knowledge and ability to work with both sides of the aisles, Speaker Hastert plans to kick-start this legislative session and push the Republican platform forward. C Speaker Hastert has earned praise in Congress as a conservative leader in healthcare and business reform. In his home state of Illinois, however, he might be known best as a father, husband and former high school wrestling coach. Whatever the case, he offers the Republican party with the much-needed guidance and determination for the 106th Congress. For many, bipartisan politics has come to mean bending to the other side. Some critics see it as not working for Republican agenda items. Bipartisan politics, on the contrary, means reaching across the aisle, drawing in, then working with conservative Democrats. With a slim Republican majority, this method is quite possibly the only way to move legislation forward. As a party of fiscal and social responsibility, tax relief and less intrusive government, the Republican party in this Congress has the opportunity to make tremendous strides in promoting and passing a legislative agenda. Recently, Speaker Hastert unveiled a nine-point plan for the 106th Congress. The items include (1) Dollars to the classroom, (2) Ten percent across-the-board
