ON OUR MINDS A Women's Newsletter for Towson State College Baltimore, Md. 21204 TOWSON STATE COLLEGE WOMEN: GETTING TOGETHER An open meeting for all TSC women students was held on october 7th at the Women's Center under the guidance of Judy Schmidt. At the meeting, the women decided to work on two topical activities; supporting the Day Care Center and holding consciousness-raising sessions. The Day Care Center, located in Newell Hall, is in desperate need of funding in order to operate next year. Discovering that an investigation committee to explore potential funding for the Center had been organized, the group from the open meeting decided to act as a "watchdog" in regards to the actions of the investigation committee. The women will keep posted on the actions of this committee to make sure they exhaust all possible means of funding and yield productive alternatives in funding for the Day Care Center. Anyone interested in working with this "watchdog" group should contact Kathy Coster at the Women's Center. After three meetings the consciousness raising group has begun to develop a definite unity and sense of how such a group functions. If other women are interested in starting a consciousness- raising group and would like more information, contact Judy Schmidt at the Women's Center. It's not a hard thing to organize and can be very helpful to women who are questioning the values and actions of our patriarchial society and how it al1 effects us as women. A second general meeting was called for October 21st, to up-date people on the activities initiated by the previous meeting and to begin defining what, as an organized group, the TSC women students would like to do in terms of political action. Hopefully an active student political caucus will evolve from these general meetings. (Extension 826) WOMEN'S STUDIES FOR SPRING The following Women's Studies courses are being offered in the spring: Women Writers, European Fiction by Women-mainly 20th Century, The place of Women in European History, 20th Century Women Philosophers, Sportswoman in American Society, Psychology of Women. NEW! TOWSON'S AFFIRMATIVE ACTION OFFICER Dr. Annette Flower has been appointed Special Assistant to the President and Affirmative Action Officer. Her job responsibilities include not only developing and monitoring Affirmative Action programs, but also advising the college, or any person within the college, of the rights and responsibilities provided in equal opportunity and affirmative action laws and guidelines. Annette's office is AD 303 and her telephone is Ext. 896. JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR CLERICAL STAFF It has been suggested several times to the administration and the Department of Personnel that a memo be circulated listing the jobs that are available on campus. This would serve as an easy access to better positions for the clerical and secretarial staff. Since it has been said that the purpose of the Department of Personnel is to help the employees in whatever way possible to upgrade themselves, this does not seem to be an unreasonable request. In addition, the Admin- istration, on numerous occasions, has expressed an affirmative stand on the career development of women. It would seem to be advantageous to the college community in general to recruit staff within our own college community with a periodic memo of job availability. WOMEN'S CAUCUS NEEDS HELP The Women's Caucus of Towson State College, an organization open to all faculty women, full or part-time, and endorsed by Committee W of the AAUP, is in great need of help on the following committees: Grievance, Salary, Student, Title 9, Foreign Students, Child Care.and Planning. Contact Helen Pullen in the Art Dept. or Martha Kumar in Political Science to volunteer for caucus work. FACULTY WIVES CLUB The Faculty Wives Club,perhaps the oldest women's organization on campus, has its usual full load of activities planned for this year. An Art Sale Nov. 30-Dec. 1, is planned as the next fund raiser. For information on the organization, call President Carol Sobelman, 296-6062.
