TOWSON STATE COLLEGE Baltimore, Maryland 21204 January 26, 1973 Ria Fritjers Associate Dean Dear Ria: At the last meeting of the Women's Studies Committee we discussed how to increase the effectiveness of the minority committees in the departments in our Division. We agreed that they should be asked to meet a deadline in their evaluation of their courses for adequate and just inclusion of women-- that without the deadline they would do little or nothing. We also agreed that it would be better for you than for us to set the deadline. I have sent (today) notes to department Chairs in Division I requesting a few minutes at a department meeting early in second semester for Elaine and I to present an explanation of Women's Studies. As a basis for their consideration we would furnish them with lists of Women's Studies courses in their discipline offered elsewhere, with bibliographies and reports of research in progress, and any other information we have gathered (for example, we are compiling a library of examination copies at our office in the Women's Center). We would hope to give our presentation before the department minority committee does its evaluation so that they would have a better idea of what to look for and what might be the possibilities in their field. We would also like to be able to respond to their evaluation before the end of the semester. Therefore, we would recommend a deadline of early April for the department minority committees. We would like to receive from them an evalua- tion of: l) the inclusion of women in their courses (degree and extent of, possibilities for, etc.) 2) courses devoted exclusively to women 3) future plans and intentions 4) problems encountered in this effort S) any other relevant information 6) list of faculty interested in teaching a section of a course or an entire course on women If you have any questions or suggestions, please call me (821-8366).
