President, the University community is assembled for commencement. Good morning. I welcome you to the 137th Commencement exercise

celebrating the University's top priority, the academic attainment of our students. Please stand for our National Anthem. We'll be led in singing by Teresa Rose Bowser, a graduating

music major with a concentration in voice and performance. What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight o'er the ramparts

we watched were so gallantly streaming, and the rockets' red glare the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Thank you Miss Bowser, please be seated. The flags on display on the stage today represent the 37 countries of students graduating from Towson this spring. As you can see, an education at Towson University not only

serves our region and our state, but also reaches across the nation and around the world. I now call upon Secretary Hagner, our Mr. a member of the University System Maryland Board of

Regents, who bring greetings from the System Regent. Mr. Thank you very much. It's certainly a pleasure for me to be here this morning.

Interim President Jones, distinguished guests and especially members of the graduating class. I'm delighted to be with you this morning to bring bring greetings from the University of Maryland Board of Regents to the

families and friends, professors and staff members who are with us. Thank you for the part that you played in the lives of these graduates.

Today belongs to the Class of 2002, of course, and we are very proud of that. Speaking of advice, I'm sure graduates that as today approached, you collected so many perils of wisdom that you

could string a few necklaces by now, most commencement speakers want to share what we've learned in the hope that you'll gain something from our experiences. We want to keep you from repeating our mistakes and spare

you from my hardships. Yes, it makes sense to learn from others, but you learn so much by charting your own course, even if it wanders at times.

While it's never wise to disregard what other people say, it is a terrible idea to substitute their experience and knowledge for your own. Sometimes you need to learn a completely different lesson than

what they've learned. Other times your lesson may be the same, but maybe it will take a different kind of experience for you to really absorb it. There's rarely, despite what we like to believe, sometimes one

right answer. I like that, for it says to me that our possibilities are unlimited. The author Richard Bach has written about parallel lifetimes

in the variety of possibilities that exist for us depending on whether we turn to the left, right, whether we say yes or no, whether we stay or go. Whatever choice we make has its own consequences and advantages.

Difficult as it may be, we have to trust that we are ready for what lies ahead. Over the past several months we have been reminded what we can never know, what's around the corner.

We can't know a what wonderful opportunity may come our way or life changing event that may force us to rethink what we thought we knew and believed. Even with all we can't know.

What I do know is that this university has prepared you well for the future, however that future unfolds. Well, it looks like I've just joined all the others who have given you their two cents worth.

As a father and grandfather, I guess I just couldn't help myself. So in closing, I just say once again, congratulations. You should be very proud of yourselves today and may many,

many bright days lie ahead. Thank you very much and congratulations. Thank you. Thank you, Regent.

Mr. We're also fortunate to have with us a member of Towson Alumni Board, Lone Azola, who will bring words of welcome from the Alumni Association.

Members of the Class of 2002. I bring you greetings on behalf of the over 88,000 alumni who have preceded you. We salute each and everyone of you for all of your perseverance

and all that it took to bring you here today. All of the undertakings, even trying to find that last parking space on campus that you had to get to in order to fulfill your requirements for the course to be in attendance.

As alumni, we are enriched by each other's achievements and by Towson's as well. We are a family. You can certainly count on us, and we surely hope to count on

you. As of today, this moment, you are officially a member of the Towson University Alumni Association. We encourage you to come back and share your success with us.

You have a new and important role, which is to help us make Towson an even stronger and more nationally recognized university. Congratulations.

I've lived to regret it if I did. It's now my pleasure to introduce Miss Chantelle Kathleen Coyle. Miss Coyle is graduating with a degree in art education.

She's a member of Psychi psychology Honor Society and the Golden Key Honor Society. Miss Coyle has completed internships Villa Maria, Norrisville Elementary, Dublin elementary and Richly middle

schools. She's exhibited her work in the Towson Student Art Show. Her career plans are to teach art in an elementary or a middle school.

Miss Coyle, Thank you. President Jones, Provost Leather Regent, Mr. Honored guests, faculty, family and friends. Let me begin by saying how humbled and honored I am to be

your commencement speaker. I have to say I was surprised to be selected. This is the last thing I imagined when I entered this university five years ago.

And I began to think, what could I say that would be of importance to so many people, most of whom I have never even met? I began to reflect on my time at Towson, the many majors I

declared, only to change them a semester later. Like many of you, I began with the infamous undeclared major. And then I changed to a major in art, and I changed to a major in psychology, and then a double major, then back again and back

again. I finally settled on clinical psychology. This was my definite. This was where I was going to be.

And to my surprise, a semester after I chose that major, I found out that it was not for me. And so, in the middle of my junior year, I changed to art education, my true home.

But through it all, one thing has remained constant. The professors have all had such a passion, such a fire for what they teach. It's not so much that they instructed us what to think, but

rather how to think. And this is the gift that enables us to learn for a lifetime. Now I had the experience this past weekend of going to Western

Maryland and watching my husband build a campfire. And I noticed that as he placed this damp wood on the fire, it began to dry out and then glow with heat. But if the Greenwood was removed too soon, the embers could not

sustain themselves. They soon faded and the wood could not light. But if the wood stays in the fire, the embers will grow. They then share in the heat of the other logs until the wood

begins to burn brightly. Then the Greenwood has taken its place. It's ready to keep the fire going and able to light other pieces of wood as they too are added to the fire.

So it is with our education. We began our journey here at Towson unseasoned and untested. But as we attended classes, we learned here a little and there a little lighting our embers.

We have been taught by some wonderful professors. Some have guided us, others have inspired us, and a special few have become our mentors and our dear friends. Even those professors who did none of the above still helped

prepare us for the real world. Yet it is not only what we learned in the classroom that has prepared us. In some ways, the lessons we have learned outside the

classroom have been more important. We have learned tolerance as we endured difficult roommates and the dreaded group projects. Our patience has been tested as we hit the redial number

endlessly trying to register for classes. We tried to contain our frustration as we raced around the parking garage fighting everyone else for that last precious parking spot.

We have also been through the unique experience of internships, or as I like to consider them, paying someone else so that we can work for free. These real world situations are where our skills were truly

tested. Our confidence grew with each new experience. For me, it was overcoming the panic of student teaching when I realized that I had a class of 33 juniors staring right at me.

But we all pressed on and we applied the skills and knowledge that we had learned at Towson to our real life situations. I think these are internships are where we grow up educationally, often surprising ourselves as we succeed.

And through it all, we learned both in and out of the classroom that we became responsible for education. We became responsible for keeping the flame of learning alive, not only in ourselves, but in others.

It is our responsibility to seek out those in need of inspiration and share in the light that we give. Now, as a teacher, this will be a little easier for me. I'll have a class of students captive who have to, I hope, to

inspire and motivate. Not all of you will be this lucky, but this is the challenge that I extend to all of you today. Use the talents you have, for the woods would be quite silent

if no birds sang except the best. I am by no means the best at what I do, but I believe that each one of us has something to offer that no one else can. Find what that is for you.

Believe in it, develop it, and then share it. Nothing will bring you greater joy. Congratulations to the class of 2002. We made it.

Thank you, Miss Coyle. This is one of the happiest days of the academic year. We celebrate first and foremost, the graduates, of whom we're also very proud.

There are many here today who share in their accomplishments. There is, in particular, one very special group whose contributions deserve full recognition, the faculty. We have the finest graduating class in Maryland because Towson

University has the very best faculty. Will the faculty of the University please rise, including our emeritus faculty graduates? Please join me in showing our appreciation for this

outstanding group of dedicated and caring mentors. Joining us on stage today are leaders of the University. Through their dedication and expertise, they enable the success of our students.

On the 1st row are the officers of the University, those responsible for facilitating our academic programs, members of the Board of Trustees of the University Senate, of the Alumni Association of the Student Government Association, and the

American Association of University Professors. Will these colleagues please rise so it may show our appreciation for your leadership? I would also like to thank the faculty who are serving as

faculty and student marshals at this ceremony. We thank you for your service. Please join me as we recognize those who have especially made possible the achievements of today's graduates.

First, would the mothers and fathers of our graduates please stand and remain standing? Yes, now please join them. Grandparents, great grandparents and grandchildren of the

Congratulations and best wishes to each of you. At this moment, I'd like to ask Provost Leather to come to the centre podium for a special tribute. As you know, a commencement is the beginning for a lot of

things and I congratulate all of you. But for one moment, please, let's also congratulate somebody who will also be leaving these walls and these doors with you as well, and that is Dean Lesky.

She will be moving on to a position as Provost of Wilkes University. We are all very sad for her leaving, although we're very happy for what's next for her.

She has served this university so well, not only being an alum, she has been here 32 years as a faculty member, as a chair and as Dean of the college. You are her legacy and she is very proud of all of you.

And as we are very proud of all of you, of her, would you please stand and give her a privilege? Will everyone please stand and join Teresa Bowser in the singing of the Alma Mater?
